Each day leading up to the Kentucky Derby, we’ll take a look at the pedigrees of some contenders, and how those pedigrees might factor into their ability to succeed at the 1 ¼-mile Derby distance.

We'll factor in the distance and class performance of each entrant's sire and dam, along with how successful those horses have been at producing class and distance performance in their breeding careers.

Horses will be analyzed in post position order. To view each installment as they're published throughout the week, click here.

#13 - West Saratoga
Exaggerator x Mo Wicked, by Uncle Mo

Exaggerator was consistently one of the top colts of his class throughout his career, highlighted by a victory in the 2016 Preakness Stakes and a runner-up effort in the Kentucky Derby. He also won the G1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and G1 Santa Anita Derby, both at 1 1/8 miles.

Despite his own success with longer races, Exaggerator’s average progeny winning distance of 6.59 furlongs is one of the lowest numbers of this year’s class of Derby sires.

His best runner is Skippylongstocking, who recently added a victory in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap (1 1/8 miles) to a resume that already included wins in the G2 Charles Town Classic Stakes (1 1/8 miles), the G3 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes (1 1/16 miles), the G3 West Virginia Derby (1 1/8 miles) and two editions of the G3 Challenger Stakes (1 1/16 miles).

Skippylongstocking also finished third in the 2022 Belmont Stakes and fifth in the Preakness Stakes.

Skippylongstocking and West Saratoga comprise Exaggerator’s two career U.S. graded stakes winners at stud. In South and Central America, he is led by Storm Tiger, who won the Chilean Group 3 Ignacio Urrutia de la Sotta E Ignacio Urrutia del Rio at 1,300 meters (about 6 ½ furlongs) and Miss Maritza, who won the Panamanian Group 3 Clasico Jorge Ameglio at about six furlongs.

West Saratoga would be Exaggerator’s first Kentucky Derby starter.

Mo Wicked is an unraced daughter of Uncle Mo, out of the Candy Ride mare Wicked Ride.

Both of her foals to race are winners, starting with the Cross Traffic filly Mo Traffic, whose one win in four starts came in a five-furlong maiden special weight at Delaware Park.

#14 - Endlessly
Oscar Performance x Dream Fuhrever, by Langfuhr

Oscar Performance was one of North America’s top turf horses of the mid-2010s, winning seven graded stakes races, including four in Grade 1 company.

Those Grade 1 scores came in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (one mile), Belmont derby Invitational Stakes (1 ¼ miles), Secretariat Stakes (1 ¼ miles), and Woodbine Mile Stakes (one mile).

His average progeny winning distance of 7.33 furlongs puts him in the upper-middle tier among this year’s class of Kentucky Derby sires.

Oscar Performance has sired four graded stakes winners, led by Red Carpet Ready, whose trio of graded stakes wins have come at 6 ½ or seven furlongs. Andthewinneris joined that list with a victory going 1 1/16 miles in the G2 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland. Endlessly earned his graded stakes credential around two turns in the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park, while Tumbarumba won the one-mile Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Endlessly will be the first Kentucky Derby starter for Oscar Performance.

Dream Fuhrever is an unraced daughter of Langfuhr, out of the French-bred Grade 3-placed Akarad mare Society Dream.

Dream Fuhrever has had two winners from five foals to race, with her other winner besides Endlessly being the Mizzen Mast gelding Dream Trip, who won a one-mile Gulfstream Park maiden special weight on the turf for his only victory.

Among Dream Fuhrever’s non-winning foals, Good Offense, by First Defence, saw his best effort when third in a one-mile maiden special weight at the Fair Grounds. Peacefield, by Animal Kingdom, finished last in her lone start, a 6 ½-furlong Santa Anita Park maiden special weight, while Dream Role, by Oscar Performance, went winless in maiden special weight races around one turn at Kentucky Downs and around two turns at Keeneland.

#15 - Domestic Product
Practical Joke x Goods and Services, by Paynter

Practical Joke was at his best from seven furlongs to a mile during his own racing career, taking the G1 Hopeful Stakes and G1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes at seven furlongs and the G1 Champagne Stakes and G3 Dwyer Stakes at a mile.

However, he also displayed an ability to go longer, with runner-up efforts in the G2 Blue Grass Stakes (1 1/8 miles) and G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes (1 1/16 miles), and third-place efforts in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (1 1/16 miles) and G1 Haskell Invitational Stakes (1 1/8 miles).

Practical Joke’s runners have taken to the shorter side of his on-track resume. His average progeny winning distance of 6.42 furlongs ranks last among this year’s class of Kentucky Derby sires.

Practical Joke has nine Grade/Group 1 winners, with two of them coming in the Northern Hemisphere. Practical Move racked up wins in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity (1 1/16 miles), G2 San Felipe Stakes (1 1/16 miles) and G1 Santa Anita Derby (1 1/8 miles) before being scratched from Kentucky Derby contention last year in the leadup to the race. Chocolate Gelato joined him with a victory in the G1 Frizette Stakes, going one mile.

Among his South American runners, Practical Joke is led by Mbagnick, who won the G1 Gran Criterium-Mauricio Serrano Palma – the third leg of the Chilean Quadruple Crown – at 1,900 meters (1 3/16 furlongs). Joke Sisi took the Chilean 1,000 Guineas at 1,600 meters (about one mile).

Both of her foals to race are winners, including Convertible Freeze, a gelding by Connect who is a four-time winner. Convertible Freeze’s wins have all come in the New York claiming ranks between one mile and one mile and 70 yards.

#16 - Grand Mo the First
Uncle Mo x Lilies So Fair, by Giant’s Causeway

Uncle Mo was the champion 2-year-old male of 2010 after notching wins in the G1 Champagne Stakes (one mile) and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (1 1/16 miles). He scaled back a bit at three, with wins at one mile in the G2 Kelso Handicap and the Timely Writer Stakes, and a narrow runner-up effort at seven furlongs in the G1 King’s Bishop Stakes.

Uncle Mo is the sire of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, who was the champion 2-year-old male of the previous season. A member of Uncle Mo’s first crop, Nyquist helped propel his sire to record freshman earnings during the 2015 racing season. Uncle Mo was eight years old when Nyquist won the Derby, tying him for the youngest stallion to get a Derby winner with the likes of Gallant Fox, Raise a Native, and Maria’s Mon. He’d later be joined by Bodemeister and Good Magic in what has become an eight-way tie.

From there, Uncle Mo has become a solid source of distance influence, with his average progeny winning distance of 7.49 furlongs placing him in the top quarter of this year’s Derby sires.

His 14 career Grade 1 winners have also included Belmont Stakes winner Mo Donegal; Outwork, who won the G1 Wood Memorial Stakes at 1 1/8 miles; Adare Manor, who is a two-time Grade 1 winner at 1 1/16 miles, and Mo Town, who took the G1 Hollywood Derby at 1 1/8 miles.

Lilies So Fair won one of six starts during her on-track career, taking a maiden special weight on the turf at Arlington Park, going about one mile.

All six of her foals to race have been winners. Palladium, a gelding by Graydar, is the most notable of the bunch besides Grand Mo the First, with six victories. All but two of those wins came at one mile, primarily in the claiming ranks of Southern California, Ohio, and West Virginia. He also finished second in the Gottstein Futurity, a 1 1/16-mile race at Emerald Downs.

My Fair Lily, a filly by Smoke Glacken, won once in eight starts, taking a six-furlong maiden special weight at Aqueduct. My Good Man, a Curlin gelding, tallied three wins, all at 1 1/16 miles in Maryland.

Super Twenty Seven, a Super Saver filly, tallied four wins in 14 starts, all in claiming races in New York at one mile or one mile and 70 yards. World Party, a filly by Orb, was a winner in five of 25 starts, primarily in the East Coast optional claiming ranks from 5 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles.

#17 - Fierceness
City of Light x Nonna Bella, by Stay Thirsty

City of Light is a four-time Grade 1 winner from distances ranging from seven furlongs (Malibu Stakes and Triple Bend Stakes) to 1 1/8 miles (Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes). He also won the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

His average progeny winning distance of 6.99 furlongs puts in the middle of the pack among this year’s class of Kentucky Derby sires, but as one of the younger sires in the group, that number could fluctuate as more of his crops mature and are offered more opportunities to race and win around two turns.

Fierceness, the champion 2-year-old male of 2023, became the first Grade 1 winner for City of Light when he won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile; a 1 1/16-mile race. He will be City of Light’s first Kentucky Derby starter.

City of Light is also the sire of Mimi Kakushi, who won the Group 3 U.A.E. Oaks at 1,900 meters (roughly 1 3/16 miles) then finished eighth in last year’s Kentucky Oaks. Also from his first crop, Chop Chop broke her maiden at a mile on the turf, then finished second by a nose in the G1 Alcibiades going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Keeneland. Earlier this year, Chop Chop tallied a stakes victory in the Wintergreen Stakes, racing one mile over Turfway Park’s all-weather surface.

Nonna Bella won two of five career starts, both at age three. She won her debut effort, a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park, in February of her sophomore campaign. Then, she followed up with a front-running score in a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race at the same track a month later.

Fierceness is Nonna Bella’s first foal to race, and her first winner. In addition to his Breeders’ Cup score, Fierceness most recently won the G1 Florida Derby at 1 1/8 miles.
