The Philadelphia 76ers are taking extra steps to make sure that the Wells Fargo Center is packed with Sixers fans for Game 6 against the New York Knicks.

In Games 3 and 4 of their first-round series, Knicks fans showed out in South Philly and matched the Sixers fans in loudness of cheers and overall intensity. Joel Embiid said it was “disappointing” to see New York fans outshine Philly fans, which was extra apparent after the Knicks’ Game 4 win as “F**k Embiid” chants filled the main concourse.

In response, 76ers owners Josh Harris, David Blitzer and David Adelman and Fanatics CEO/former team co-owner Michael Rubin have purchased more than 2,000 tickets to Game 6 for local first responders, healthcare workers and community groups. Rubin said that the Sixers “absolutely CANNOT let Knicks fans take over our arena again!!!”

Additionally, the Sixers announced that they will run their “Bricken for Chicken” promotion, a partnership with Chick-fil-A that rewards fans with free chicken nuggets when the opposing team misses its free throws, for the entirety of games for the rest of their home playoff games. Since its inception at the start of last season, it has typically been in play for just the second half of games.

“We experienced firsthand this season how ‘Bricken for Chicken’ has elevated the gameday experience, bringing a high level of energy to not only the 76ers fans, but also the team,” said Sam Class, an owner and operator of Chick-fil-A restaurants near Philadelphia, in the team’s announcement. “We want to help do our part in making tomorrow night’s game the best Philly atmosphere possible. By extending the promotion for the entire game, we hope to create a true home court advantage.”

The first time an opposing player misses two consecutive foul shots, fans win a five-count of free nuggets. The second time that happens, it rises to eight. A third occurrence raises it to 12. The Philly crowd gets extra loud when the chance for free Chick-fil-A is at stake.

The Sixers’ website counts 15 total times the promotion has been activated this season, one of which came against the Knicks in a loss on February 22, and 859,928 total nuggets. The promotion played a part in their play-in-game win over the Miami Heat, when Caleb Martin missed a pair of third-quarter free throws and gave the Sixers momentum to spark a successful comeback.

While the purchasing of tickets for 76ers fans is an admittance that Knicks fans have the capability to take over The Center again, the team ownership taking measures to ensure a more advantageous home environment is the correct and smart decision. It’s better to take these actions to reinvigorate the home crowd than it is to act like nothing happened.

After Tyrese Maxey’s clutch sequence to steal Game 5 in Madison Square Garden, the 76ers are down 3-2 and looking to force another game back in New York. Tip-off for Game 6 is scheduled for 9:00 PM EST.
