Steelers Could Be 'Tempted To Not' Pick Up Najee Harris' 5th Year Option For 1 Big Reason
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers face a significant decision regarding their star running back, Najee Harris. With Arthur Smith stepping in as the new offensive coordinator and the team poised to return to its trademark Steelers football style, it appears highly likely that the Steelers will exercise Harris' fifth-year option before the looming deadline on Thursday.

Selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Harris, like all first-round picks, is entitled to a rookie deal that includes a fifth-year option. The Steelers have until Thursday to determine whether they will exercise this option. If they do, Harris will be guaranteed $6.79 million in 2025.

NFL insider Mike Florio shared his insights during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday, offering a unique perspective on the Steelers' impending decision regarding Harris' fifth-year option.

"With [Najee] Harris, it's a tougher call. Because sometimes, and I remember this with Doug Martin when the Buccaneers didn't pick up his fifth-year option, it was the proverbial kick in the butt to get the most out of him the next year. And then they signed him to a new contract after that fourth season. So it's part of the psychology of how do we get the most out of the player."

Florio reminisced about a story involving former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin. He recounted how the Buccaneers utilized not picking up Martin's fifth-year option as a motivational tool, eventually signing him to a contract after that final season. He believes the Steelers could adopt a similar approach with Harris.

"But once you extend it, it’s fully guaranteed. He’s getting that money no matter what. They might be tempted to not do it, just to see what they get out of him in a contract year," Florio added.

Florio highlighted the significance of the risk involved, noting that if the fifth-year option is exercised, the money becomes fully guaranteed regardless of circumstances. However, compared to players like Justin Fields, whose contract would entail closer to $23 million guaranteed, the risk with Harris isn't as substantial.

Harris has been a model of consistency, recording three consecutive seasons of rushing for 1,000 yards. Since his rookie season in Pittsburgh, where he earned a Pro Bowl nod, Harris has been a reliable producer. In his three seasons with the Steelers, he has amassed 834 carries for 3,269 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns.

While Harris initially made an impact as a receiving back in his rookie season, he has also demonstrated his versatility in this regard. With six receiving touchdowns and 886 receiving yards to his name, Harris has proven his ability to contribute in the passing game, although his targets have decreased annually.

Steelers’ Najee Harris Is Set For A Career Year In 2024

The Steelers would be prudent to exercise Harris' fifth-year option without hesitation. It's evident they see him as a long-term asset and value his contributions. Despite operating within a mediocre offense and behind a struggling offensive line, Harris has showcased his hard-nosed running style and consistent productivity. Now, with significant improvements made to the offensive line and a commitment to further enhancements, Harris is poised for a breakout season.

With Smith at the helm of the offense and the Steelers doubling down on supporting their running backs, Harris stands to benefit immensely in 2024. He's likely to see a significant increase in opportunities, with a higher volume of carries and more favorable play-calling. Additionally, improved quarterback play will alleviate some pressure on Harris, allowing him to thrive.

While the idea of using the absence of the fifth-year option as motivation for Harris isn't outlandish, it's unlikely given the circumstances. Nevertheless, if the Steelers opt not to exercise the option, it could serve as additional fuel for Harris, who is already driven to succeed.
